Children’s Class “What is Art?”

Course Objective: Introduction to various elements/principles, specifically LINE, TEXTURE, COLOR, and SHAPE, through weekly hands-on projects, culminating with a final self portrait. Students come away with inspiration and encouragement to explore various techniques in creating their very own work of art.
Week 1: LINE
Students will explore mark making and how to draw and identify many different types of lines by using charcoal on paper.
Week 2: TEXTURE
By creating texture rubbings from surfaces around the classroom, students will learn how texture can create emphasis in their artwork.
Week 3: COLOR
Students will receive an introduction to basic color theory and create their own color wheel while learning proper techniques for using paint and caring for paint brushes.
Students will also engage in group discussion on how color can affect mood and feeling in art.
Week 4: SHAPE
Students will learn about geometric and organic shapes and work in groups to create and discuss all the ways shape can be used to enhance their artwork.
Week 5: SELF PORTRAIT
Students will combine their knowledge of shape, color, texture and line to design their very own self portrait.
Week 6: COMPLETE SELF PORTRAITS and DISPLAY ART FOR DISCUSSION
Students will use studio time to complete their final portrait and come together as a class to review and discuss each other’s artwork.
